iLOQ releases its first Environmental Product Declaration for the Oval Half Cylinder

iLOQ announces the release of its first-ever Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).
An environmental product declaration (EPD) is a standardized, 3rd-party-verified document that transparently communicates the environmental impacts of a product. The impact analysis is based on a life cycle assessment (LCA) – a tool to calculate a product’s environmental impacts, for example, carbon footprint, throughout its entire life cycle, starting from raw material extraction to end-of-life.
The analysis shows that the studied product’s climate impact is 11.2 kg CO₂e per unit. By eliminating batteries and reducing maintenance needs, iLOQ solutions lower lifecycle costs and environmental impact – helping customers meet their own ESG and carbon reduction targets.
Why is there an increased interest in product-level carbon footprints
LCAs and EPDs allow objective comparison of products with the same function and are vital, not only for reporting purposes, but to support decision-making and promote sustainable choices.
According to the World Green Building Council, buildings are currently responsible for 39% of global energy-related carbon emissions, and the number of MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) EPDs is increasing as the industry seeks to cut emissions across the board.
The growing interest in product-level carbon footprints is driven by several interconnected factors:
1. Consumer demand for transparency
- People increasingly want to know the environmental impact of products they use. Labels showing carbon footprint help locksmiths, developers, and consumers make informed choices that support this demand.
2. Corporate sustainability goals
- Companies are setting net-zero targets and need granular data to identify hotspots in their supply chains.
- Product-level data enables more accurate reporting and targeted reduction strategies, as mandated by several local and regional sustainability reporting regimes.
3. Regulatory pressure
- Governments and regions, such as the European Union, are introducing stricter climate-related disclosure requirements for property owners. This also includes property investors.
- Upcoming regulations often require product-specific emissions data, not just company-wide averages. In the Nordics, regulations mandate the calculation of the carbon footprint of new buildings – lowering emissions is becoming necessary.
“Producing EPDs for our products isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s becoming an absolute necessity to stay competitive and meet sustainability requirements from both regulators and customers. Our ambition is to be most sustainable smart access solution provider available, and this is a step towards backing that vision with action,” states Krista Huttu, Sustainability and Business Excellence Manager at iLOQ.
The impact of digital tools and data
Advances in lifecycle assessment (LCA) tools and supply chain analytics make it easier to calculate footprints at the product level. They show emission hotspots and provide the possibility to start exploring reduction options where they matter.
What does this mean for iLOQ
iLOQ’s first-ever EPD is available on Smart EPD. iLOQ will proceed with publishing EPDs in accordance with customers’ requests and continue to find ways to reduce environmental impact on a product level.
