The benefits of battery-free smart locks

Smart access is a key part of smart living, promising convenience, flexibility, and better control over entry. Yet many smart locking systems still rely on batteries, introducing hidden compromises. Batteries create maintenance cycles, reliability risks, and long-term sustainability challenges that grow with every door installed.

Battery-free smart locking takes a different approach. Instead of storing power inside the lock, energy is generated only at the moment access is needed. This removes a major point of failure and allows smart access systems to be simpler, more reliable, and better aligned with sustainability goals.

At iLOQ, this principle is central to our smart access technology. Our battery-free locks use energy harvesting to generate power during unlocking instead of relying on stored energy. This happens in two ways: through our digital key, which looks like a traditional key, and through NFC-enabled digital credentials such as a smartphone or our key fob.

With our digital key, access rights are stored digitally within the key itself. When the user inserts and turns the key, that physical action generates kinetic energy. The lock converts this movement into enough power to activate its electronics, verify access rights, and set the lock cylinder to an openable state. The user can then open the lock and the door. There is no standby power consumption and no gradual energy loss. The lock remains inactive until it is used.

In our NFC-based systems, energy is transferred wirelessly from an NFC-enabled smartphone or our key fob at the moment of use. This powers the authentication process in real time. The lock does not store energy internally and does not rely on batteries or external wiring. Intelligence is present only when access is requested.

Removing batteries is a major reliability advantage. Batteries degrade over time, are affected by temperature, and often fail without warning. In real buildings, this can lead to denied access and urgent maintenance visits. With our battery-free locks, this entire failure point is removed. If the credential is valid, the lock operates as intended.

The sustainability impact is equally significant. Battery-powered smart locks require continuous replacement throughout a building’s lifetime, involving manufacturing, transportation, disposal, and repeated service visits. By eliminating batteries, we reduce waste, cut maintenance-related emissions, and support long-term, low-impact smart living.

Our battery-free technology shows that smart access does not need more components to be intelligent. By harvesting kinetic and NFC energy at the point of use, we deliver smart locking that is reliable, sustainable, and designed for real-world, large-scale deployment.
