About the customer

With a population of more than 76,000 people, Gouda is a municipality in the west of the Netherlands. Most well-known for its Gouda cheese, the region has many historical properties, such as its churches and 15th-century city hall, while various municipal buildings include museums and a large theatre.

About the project

The municipality was facing challenges with their old mechanical locking system. Keys needed to be manually issued and collected, and administration of who had them involved filling in a form which was time consuming and labor intensive. The biggest challenge related to controlling access to the public lighting installations. The municipality had its own maintenance contractor, but other contractors were also needed to perform maintenance tasks. It was impossible to ensure that access was restricted to only the relevant cabinets. The municipality looked towards a smart-access solution to solve their challenges.

The solution

Working together with iLOQ’s authorized partner – Monxs – the municipality replaced its mechanical cylinders with iLOQ’s smartphone-based digital locking solution.

How life in the Municipality of Gouda became easier and more cost efficient with iLOQ

Smart access with a smartphone

Instead of having to carry around a huge bunch of keys or waste time picking up and returning keys from the administration office, contractors can get access using their smartphone as key. This enhances the efficiency of their working day and also eliminates travel-related environmental impact.

Remote programming

Access rights are remotely programmed using iLOQ’s cloud-based SaaS solution. They are sent to iLOQ’s app running on the contractor’s smartphone. The access rights can be updated in real time as needs change and immediately cancelled when a contractor’s work has been completed.

Security and cost efficiency through enhanced key management

Locking system administrators know from the programming software exactly who has access to which cabinets and when. There is no complex administration and no need to manually issue and collect physical keys.

Low lifecycle costs through battery-free operation

iLOQ’s solution is battery-free. The power needed to recognize access rights and open locks comes from the NFC induction of the contractor’s smartphone. This removes the need to purchase batteries, pay for the maintenance to continually change them and eliminates unrecyclable battery waste.

“Important advantages of iLOQ’s solution are that it works without physical keys, and you have full control over who has access and when.”
