South Prairie K-12 School District
About the customer
South Prairie School District is a K-12 public school district in North Dakota.
The school campus has grown over several decades through multiple building additions, creating a mix of buildings, door types and access requirements. With staff moving across classrooms, shared spaces and exterior access points, efficient key management is an important part of keeping the school secure and easy to operate.
About the project
South Prairie School District needed to modernize and unify access control across its growing campus.
The existing mechanical key system had become fragmented over time. With multiple building expansions and inconsistent door hardware, managing physical keys across the school was becoming inefficient and difficult to control.
The school selected iLOQ as a flexible retrofit solution that could be installed into existing hardware without the need to wire every door. Approximately 85 iLOQ locks were installed, mostly mortise locks, with some KIK and RIM locks. The solution supports more than 110 users and was installed across classrooms and selected exterior access points.
The project was delivered with local iLOQ partner TJ Stewart from ProTech Integrations and was operational in under three weeks.
The challenge
South Prairie School District’s previous access system relied on mechanical keys. As the school expanded, the system became harder to manage.
Different building phases had introduced inconsistent hardware, making it difficult to create one clear and unified access solution across the campus. Physical keys also created security and administrative challenges. Keys could be copied, misplaced or not returned, and there was limited visibility over who had access to different areas.
The school needed a smarter way to manage access for teachers, staff and other authorized users, including flexible access outside normal school hours.
Why iLOQ
South Prairie School District chose iLOQ because it offered a practical way to move from mechanical keys to digital access without replacing every door or installing a fully wired access control system.
The ability to retrofit iLOQ into existing hardware was a major advantage. It allowed the school to modernize access across different building areas and door types, while avoiding the disruption and cost of a traditional wired system.
The school also saw strong value in iLOQ’s low-maintenance design. With no batteries to change and no need to wire each door, iLOQ provided a simple and cost-efficient way to improve security, control and everyday access management.
Key benefits
Retrofit across existing hardware
iLOQ allowed South Prairie School District to upgrade access across a campus with mixed door hardware and multiple building generations. Instead of replacing doors or standardizing every lock first, the school could retrofit iLOQ into the existing environment and modernize access more efficiently.
Better control over access rights
The school can now manage access digitally, making it easier to add, remove or update users when access needs change. This gives the school more control over who can enter different areas, when they can enter and how access is managed across the campus.
Cost-efficient alternative to wired access
iLOQ provided a more practical route to digital access than a fully wired system. South Prairie School District avoided the cost and complexity of wiring every door, while still gaining the benefits of modern access control across key areas of the school.
Simple operation with no battery maintenance
The system has been simple for the school to run and operate. With no battery changes or regular lock maintenance required, iLOQ helps reduce long-term upkeep and gives the school confidence that the system can continue to grow as needs change.
“It’s been over a year now, and we haven’t had to do anything. No battery changes, no maintenance… you just don’t worry about it.”
