About the customer

Randers Municipality is located on the Jutland peninsula in Central Denmark. With a population of almost 100,000 and a total area of 800 km2, it is one of the largest municipalities in Denmark.

About the project

The municipality was looking to modernize its access management solution by replacing the outdated mechanical locks. One of the main reasons was that rekeying was extremely costly and time-consuming after keys had been lost. It also wanted to find a solution that could increase the efficiency of the fire department that needed access to all the fire stations and trucks in the four different municipalities it serves.

The solution

Randers chose to implement a combination of iLOQ’s battery-free digital-key-based and smartphone-based smart access solutions in several areas of the municipality. For example, the iLOQ S5 digital-key-based solution has been installed in social housing units. While the iLOQ S50 smartphone-based solution has been installed in key tubes that provide fast access for emergency services.

How life in Randers Municipality became more secure and efficient with iLOQ

Low lifecycle costs through battery-free operation

iLOQ’s solution is battery-free. The power needed to recognize access rights and open locks comes from the motion of inserting the digital key into the lock or from the NFC induction of the smartphone when it is held against the lock. This removes the need to purchase batteries and pay for the maintenance to continually change them and eliminates unrecyclable battery waste.

Centralized programming keeps access up to date

Access rights are centrally created with iLOQ’s easy-to-use cloud-based SaaS solution. They are programmed to iLOQ’s digital keys or sent to iLOQ’s app running on the end user’s smartphone. The access rights can be updated remotely and in real time as needs change and immediately blocked if, for example, a key is lost to keep security levels high. A new key can be quickly and easily programmed.

Simplified administration and powerful integration

Administrators know from the programming software exactly who has access to where and when. The need to manually issue and collect physical keys is removed, and security risks related to lost or stolen keys and unauthorized key copying are eliminated. Access logs prevent or help solve instances of misuse. iLOQ’s solution can be integrated into the current infrastructure and, for example, with existing home care systems. And it is scalable and easy to manage across multiple municipalities.

Fast and efficient access for emergency services

Keys stored in iLOQ S50 key tubes are primarily used by fire departments for emergency access to buildings. These key tubes are installed so firefighters can quickly enter during a fire or other emergencies. The locking system was designed to work across four municipalities, allowing all fire stations and fire trucks to access it. This shared system helps improve coordination and support between departments.

“iLOQ is reliable and can be easily used and managed without a high level of technical knowhow. It supports both our physical and digital needs and is fully scalable – as our buildings increase, the solution can be quickly expanded.”
