Kerava Upper Secondary School in Southern Finland has around 550 students and about 50 members of staff.
About the project
With the old mechanical locking system, school doors were left unlocked during the day. This meant that it was easy for unauthorized people to enter and vital school assets had gone missing.
It was important to find a solution where the school doors could be locked during the day to ensure a safe learning environment and prevent theft.
The solution
The school opted for a multi-purpose solution. Students use iLOQ’s phone-based solution which gives them access through iLOQ’s app running on their smartphone; staff use the programmable digital keys; external parties use a PIN code with iLOQ’s door readers.
Access to external doors, for example during school events, can also be controlled through calendar settings on iLOQ’s cloud-based programming software.
The smartphone-based solution was chosen for students as they all have a smartphone and there is no need to carry around additional keys. It is an easy-to-use and secure solution as each student has a personal phone key for their individual access needs.

Enhanced security
The school has control at all times over who has access to where and when. iLOQ’s solution prevents unauthorized access which has eliminated the theft of vital school assets. Any lost keys are quickly and easily deactivated in iLOQ’s cloud-based administration software.
Scalable solution
iLOQ’s solution is highly flexible and scalable. As staff change, or new users (staff or students) join or leave, the access rights in iLOQ’s cloud-based administration software can be updated quickly and easily.
Fast and convenient access
Students don’t need to wait outside for teachers to open doors if they are locked; they just use their smartphones. And teachers don’t need to waste precious time coming to open doors. Students can also get access if they want to study, for example, outside of normal school hours.
Easy integration
To further enhance security and the user experience, iLOQ’s solution has been integrated with existing systems. When a student joins the school, the integration with Enter Ruutuvihko enables data transfer from the Primus school administration system to iLOQ’s cloud-based administration software. This activates iLOQ’s phone key on the student’s smartphone. When the student graduates or leaves the school, removing their study rights from Primus automatically deactivates their phone key.
