ElmoNet optimizes telecom site security with iLOQ

ElmoNet is a Finnish online service provider with several properties and over 100 outdoor sites throughout Finland.
About the project
ElmoNet’s old mechanical locking and access control systems had reached the end of their service lives, which meant that the security of the sites could not be guaranteed. Key management was manual and resource intensive with a dedicated person needed to physically hand over keys to subcontractors. There was no accurate information about how many keys were in circulation, who had visited where and when and it was impossible to ensure that the keys were returned. To provide the level of security required for their telecommunications centers, mobile network base stations, data centers and office buildings, ElmoNet decided to completely overhaul their access-management solution.
The solution
ElmoNet chose to implement a combination of iLOQ’s battery-free digital-key-based and keyless smartphone-based access-management solutions and iLOQ’s Online readers.
The digital-key-based solution is used for ElmoNet’s server cabinets, indoor spaces and exterior doors. The smartphone-based solution is ideal for contractors who receive their access rights as a ‘mobile key’ sent to iLOQ’s app running on their smartphone. There’s no need for them to carry around huge bunches of physical keys or travel between administration offices and sites to pick up and return them – they have everything they need to get access on their smartphone. This solution is also used for the padlocks for outdoor locations and masts and for the key tube locks for housing association premises.
The iLOQ Online readers (which allow, for example, access using RFID/PIN codes) are installed on property doors and are partially integrated into the alarm system.

Simplified administration
One digital key or mobile key contains all the access rights a member of staff or subcontractor needs. They don’t have to carry around many keys or travel between administration offices and sites to collect and return keys. And there’s no need to worry about who has the keys and what happens if one gets lost or stolen. Everything can be seen in the easy-to-use administration software. The access rights can be quickly updated remotely and in real time and lost or stolen keys can be immediately cancelled to keep security levels high.
Enhanced security
The log data shows exactly who has used what key, when and where. This prevents or helps to solve instances of misuse. Time-restricted access ensures only the right people have access to the right places at the right times. There’s no need to keep track of extra keys – the amount of keys corresponds exactly to their need and the number of licenses is easy to adjust.
Reliable operation
iLOQ solutions do not require batteries, electricity or any maintenance tasks. With the smartphone-based solution, the power needed to recognize access rights and open locks comes from the NFC induction of a smartphone when it is held against the lock. This makes it a cost-effective solution and ensures reliable operation in sites in remote locations, in all weathers and even in power outages.
Smooth integration
iLOQ’s solutions can be integrated with burglar alarms and access-control systems so that alarms can be automatically silenced and doors remotely opened.
