Are your smart locks safe to use in explosive atmospheres?

Products in iLOQ’s new Ex-certified battery-free and keyless smart-locking product line have received certification ensuring they are safe to use in environments that contain hazardous gases and dust.
If you are working in any of these kinds of industries – oil and gas, chemicals, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, fertilizers, food and beverage, biofuel or wastewater – you need to ensure that the products you are using fulfill the Ex-requirements of the intended installation site. Using uncertified products can potentially ignite an explosive atmosphere.
A key component in iLOQ’s battery-free and keyless smart-locking solution is the smartphone. To avoid any potential risks, only explosion-proof smartphones that are certified for use in the intended Ex-classified atmosphere must be used.
Access credentials to open iLOQ smart locks are sent to an app running on the smartphone. When the smartphone is held against one of our locks, NFC (near field communication) enables the lock and phone to communicate with each other and identify the access credentials stored on the app. If the access credentials are correct, the electromagnetic induction of the smartphone provides the power to open the lock.
iLOQ smart locks conform to the standards set by the Ex-safety industry
To create a safer and more efficient world, the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) prepares and publishes international standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies. Their mission is to ensure the worldwide use of their standards and conformity assessment systems to ensure the safety, efficiency, reliability and interoperability of electrical, electronic and information technologies.
IECEx and ATEX are systems for certification to standards that relate to equipment for use in explosive atmospheres that contain hazardous gases and dust. IECEx- and ATEX-certified oval, DIN and key tube cylinders, camlocks and padlocks are now available in iLOQ’s smartphone-based access management portfolio. They are approved for use in Explosion Protection Zones 1 and 2 (gas) and Explosion Protection Zones 21 and 22 (dust), where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur occasionally in normal operation.
iLOQ’s new Ex-certified products conform to the standards set by the Ex-safety industry:
- Directive 2014/34/EU
- EN 60079-0 (Equipment for explosive atmospheres)
- EN 60079-11 (Equipment protection by intrinsic safety ‘ib’)
Explosion protection is a key area of safety engineering. iLOQ’s product family is under constant development and testing to uphold our operations to the standards set by the security industry. We are committed to safety and security whether it is related to the buildings in which you live or work, or the people and assets contained in them.
